Joanne Hanson, Founder & Director
My name is Joanne Hanson and I’ve been a licensed, practicing Speech Language Pathologist for over 20 years now. I am also the mother of two fabulous boys, who inspire me and keep me grounded. With the passion of treating kids to improve their speech and communication, and ultimately quality of life for those kids and their families, I founded MFST when I returned home to my roots. I moved back to the Seacoast after having lived and practiced in the Metro-Washington DC region for over ten years, where I ran a small private practice, also specializing in children. I love to keep busy so when I’m not with my boys or working with some of my kids, I love to compete in road races and triathlons. I enjoy all that the seacoast has to offer including surfing in the summer and skiing in the winter.
Education and Experience
Throughout my professional career, I have dedicated myself to working with kids with sensory challenges, and I have extensive experience with oral motor and feeding challenges. I have had the opportunity to work with children with Down Syndrome, Tuberous Sclerosis, Retts Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Joubers Syndrome, as well as many other special needs children. I also specialize in working with kids who have Autism Spectrum Disorders.
I have received special training in DIR (Relationship-based Individualized Differences Therapy) from noteworthy doctors, Dr. Serena Wieder and Dr. Stanley Greenspan. I also have completed PROMPT (Prompts for Restructuring Oral Muscular Targets) training for articulation and dyspraxia and have used it successfully for years. Additionally, I have authored two books, Progress with Puppets and Lip Prints. (Need link to resource page and short description on content of books.)
